Discover the famous frescoes of Lyon! Painted walls to explore in the city center during your day of walking in Lyon.

The Fresco of the Lyonnais

The Fresco of the Lyonnais, created in 1995 by CitéCréation, covers 800 m². This huge mural represents 30 Lyonnais who have marked the history of the city. Here, through the centuries, Abbé Pierre, at the entrance to the building, Paul Bocuse, our great starred chef, rubs shoulders on his right, at the door of the Pot Beaujolais. On the floor above you will see the Lumière brothers, inventors of cinema. Also represented are Saint Exupéry, and his Little Prince, Mourguet and his puppet Guignol. On the side is painted Jacquard, in front of his loom. On his balcony, he presents a fabric woven with silk.

The Tollet Fresco

A few meters from the Fresco of the Lyonnais, you can make out a section of wall, also painted. It is a fresco created in homage to the Lyon painter Tony Tollet at the request of his descendants. He is one of those few artists who have been better known abroad than in Lyon, especially in Argentina and the Vatican. On the lower level, you see him in his studio painting. Above, it is the reproduction of 4 of his works.

The Wall of the Canuts

Covering approximately 1,200 m², it is the largest fresco in Europe, in architectural trompe l’oeil. This wall evokes the life of the Croix-Roussiens and pays tribute to the silk workers. Initially painted in 1987, it was repainted in 97 and then in 2013 allowing us to see the evolution of the Croix-Rousse over time. The Croix-Rousse is changing, and so is the wall! The fresco evokes several themes: silk, to pay tribute to the history of the district, and the daily life of the Croix-Roussesiens. The stairs symbolize the connection between the slopes and the plateau. The vegetation, for its part, has been added to the latest version and symbolises the commitment of the city of Lyon to a fair and sustainable approach.

The Plant Fresco

This is the 500th work of CitéCréation, which has created an innovative work for Lyon, combining for the first time lighting, a mural and the presence of vertical vegetation. The 3 frescoes are reproductions of photos taken by Yann Arthus Bertrand, a renowned photographer known for his ecological convictions.

The Library Wall

The fresco is located on the quays of the Saône, at the level of the Quai de la Pêcherie. A place known for its second-hand booksellers. Just opposite stands the Painted Wall of the Bibliothèque de la Cité, which gives a voice to books. Nearly 500 writers from Lyon and the Rhône-Alpes region are represented.
